About this calculator
The Fabric Yardage calculator figures out how much fabric a sewing project needs. Enter the pattern's piece layout or the finished dimensions plus fabric width (commonly 45 or 60 inches); it estimates total yardage including extra for pattern matching, nap direction, and shrinkage. Buying too little stalls a project; too much wastes money.
Tip: pre-wash your fabric before cutting and add 5 percent for shrinkage — cotton can shrink enough to turn a planned seam allowance into a too-tight garment.
