⛽ Litres ↔ Gallons
Convert between litres and US or imperial gallons
About this calculator
Litres and gallons both measure volume, but the gallon is not one thing. Enter a value and convert between litres, US gallons (3.785 L), and Imperial gallons (4.546 L) — the distinction that matters for fuel economy, aquariums, and recipes across the border.
The US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches while the Imperial gallon is 4.546 litres — about 20 percent larger. That is why a car rated 30 mpg in the US would show about 36 mpg in Imperial gallons: same fuel, bigger gallon.
Tip: Canadians buy fuel in litres but often compare to US mpg figures — convert with the US gallon (3.785 L), since most published mpg numbers come from American sources.
