A proper 3-inch layer of mulch suppresses weeds and holds moisture; this calculator tells you exactly how much to buy. Enter the bed length, width, and desired depth, and get the volume in cubic yards (the unit bulk mulch is sold in) plus the equivalent number of bags. The same math works for decorative gravel and topsoil.
Tip: don't pile mulch against tree trunks — the "mulch volcano" traps moisture and rots bark; keep it a few inches back from the trunk.
