About this calculator
Splitting a restaurant bill fairly means handling tax and tip properly. Enter the subtotal, tax rate, and tip percentage, then choose even split or itemized shares — the calculator adds tax and tip proportionally so nobody subsidizes anyone else's steak.
Each person's share equals their items' fraction of the subtotal, applied to the grand total (subtotal + tax + tip). Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the standard etiquette — the calculator follows that convention.
Tip: Ontario diners: restaurant meals carry 13 percent HST, and 15 to 20 percent pre-tax is the normal tip range for good service — the calculator defaults to both.
