About this calculator
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, and this calculator scores it from any sample. Enter the characters typed and the time taken (or use it alongside a typing test) and it returns gross WPM, net WPM after errors, and accuracy percentage.
A "word" is standardized as 5 characters including spaces, so WPM equals (characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM subtracts errors — typing 80 WPM at 90 percent accuracy is effectively worse than 60 WPM clean, which is why accuracy matters more than raw speed.
Tip: Forty WPM is the common office baseline; 60 to 80 is solid professional speed. Practice accuracy first — speed follows naturally once your fingers stop making mistakes.
