📈 Climb Gradient
Feet per mile, percent grade and required climb rate
About this calculator
Climb gradient measures how much altitude you gain per mile traveled, the number that obstacle departure procedures are built on. Enter your climb rate and groundspeed to get feet per nautical mile, percent grade, and climb angle. Optionally enter a required gradient to see the exact fpm you need and your margin.
Tip: the standard minimum is 200 feet per nautical mile, but many departures demand far more. Convert the published gradient to fpm for your expected groundspeed before takeoff.
