🔄 Standard-Rate Turn Bank Angle
Bank angle and radius for a 3 degree per second turn
About this calculator
A standard-rate turn rolls you around at 3 degrees per second, which makes a full 360 take exactly 2 minutes. It is the standard for instrument flying because it is gentle, predictable, and easy to time. The bank angle needed rises with airspeed, and the old rule of thumb is airspeed divided by 10, plus 7 degrees.
Tip: practice timed turns under the hood. Rolling out on an exact heading using only the clock is a skill that saves instrument approaches.
